The Omaha License Ladder

Nebraska does not issue a statewide HVAC license. Licensing happens at the city level, and Omaha runs its own through the City of Omaha Planning Department's Air Conditioning and Air Distribution board, known as ACAD. There are 3 levels.

Apprentice. The entry certification for anyone learning the trade under licensed supervision.

Journeyman. Requires 5 or more years of ACAD installation experience, or 4 or more years of verifiable experience working for a licensed master ACAD contractor. Up to 2 years of post secondary HVAC education can count toward that requirement.

Master. Requires 8 or more years of verifiable ACAD installation experience, or 4 or more years working for a licensed master after earning the journeyman certification.

Omaha exams are given through Pearson VUE, and a score of 75 percent is required to pass. Surrounding cities can set their own rules, so confirm requirements with each city you plan to work in.

Sarpy County Data Centers and Critical Facilities Work

South of Omaha, Sarpy County has built a cluster of data centers. Google confirmed a $600 million data center in Papillion, which the Sarpy County Chamber counted as the county's 8th data center, and Meta operates a large campus in the county as well.

Where to Train in the Omaha Area

Metropolitan Community College offers an associate degree in Heating, Air Conditioning, and Refrigeration, plus career certificates in Heating and Air Conditioning Technology, Commercial HVAC/R Technology and Building Automation Systems. The ACAD board lets up to 2 years of post secondary education count toward journeyman experience, so a degree can shorten your path to a license.

A 5 Year Plan for an Omaha HVAC Tech

Year 1: Get hired as a helper or apprentice, pass EPA 608 Core and Type 1, and log every job you work under a licensed master.
Year 2: Earn Universal 608, run service calls alone, and learn gas furnace and boiler diagnostics until heating calls feel routine.
