Maintenance – HVAC Technician

The Impact You’ll Make in this Role
As an HVAC Tech, you will have the opportunity to tap into your curiosity and collaborate with some of the most innovative and diverse people in San Antonio. Here, you will make an impact by:
- Perform preventive maintenance and routine servicing of the A/C units on zoo property.
- Driving various Zoo vehicles including pickups, and flatbed trucks; front end loader, and personal lift equipment (on the job training available)
- Repair or place defective parts in units and equipment and their controls, thermostats, and switches.
- Perform skilled electrical maintenance work in the repair, installation, and alteration of HVAC equipment, components, timers, motors, and wiring systems as needed.
- Operate a variety of hand and power tools, welding torches, vacuum pumps, and test equipment utilized in the trade.
- Order materials as necessary
- Oversee a job assignment and ensure job assignments are thoroughly and adequately completed
- Simple soldering required (on-the-job training available)
- Establish and maintain positive, cooperative, and effective working relations with fellow employees.
- Constantly exhibit a guest service attitude, a smile, and an obvious interest in guest comfort and service.
- Communicate with the public in a courteous and tactful manner and assist guests with questions and directions to various areas of the Zoo. Address the guest - do not wait to be asked.
- Remove trash and debris from public areas; i.e. pick up litter whenever you see it.
- Any and all other duties as assigned.
Other Responsibilities:
- Performs other work-related duties as required and assigned.
Your Skills and Expertise
To set you up for success in this role from day one, the San Antonio Zoo recommends the following skills/qualifications:
- High school diploma or GED required.
- Willing to work third shift and other possible odd hours.
- Able to understand, foresee and apply necessary safety precautions applicable to the Zoo environment.
- Able to read, write, and understand English.
- Knowledge of hand tools and simple equipment used in performing assigned jobs and HVAC units.
- One-year trade experience including the use of tools and equipment and HVAC systems.
- Ability to follow instructions and work both independently and as part of a team.
- Comfortable working outdoors in varying weather conditions.
- Physically able to stand, kneel, bend, and lift up to 50 lbs.
- Willingness to work weekends, holidays, and flexible hours as needed.
- Work is performed outdoors and indoors in a variety of settings, including animal exhibits and public areas.
- Use of personal protective equipment (PPE) such as masks and gloves may be required.
- Responsible for completing all online training courses by assigned deadlines.
- Must be 18 years of age or older with a clean driving record for vehicle operation.
- This position requires a valid Class 'C' Texas Driver's License or a valid driver's license from another state with the ability to obtain a Class "C" Texas Driver's License within 45 days of becoming employed.
- Successful candidates must complete a pre-employment drug screening and background check.
- We enjoy year-round operation for all staff, must be available day, nights, weekends, and occasional special after-hour assignments.
