Protestant Music Director - $50.00 per hour, commensurate with experience - Vandenberg Space Force Base in Lompoc, California
Do you know how to build an engaging worship experience through contemporary, traditional, and gospel music? Are you a confident church musician who can lead from the piano, keyboard, or guitar while bringing singers and volunteers together?
The role
We are looking for a part-time Protestant Music Director to support the Protestant worship community at Vandenberg Space Force Base in Lompoc, California.
This is an opportunity to do more than simply play music. You will help shape each worship service by selecting music that connects with the sermon, Scripture, and overall message of the day.
Working closely with the Lead Protestant Chaplain, the Protestant Music Director will lead weekly services and rehearsals while supporting a choir or praise team of volunteer musicians and vocalists.
The position offers approximately 4 hours per week, on a 1099 independent contractor basis.
Key Responsibilities
- Lead music for weekly Protestant worship services and rehearsals.
- Select songs that complement sermon topics, themes, and Scripture readings.
- Play piano/keyboard or guitar and confidently lead congregational worship.
- Organize and direct choir or praise team rehearsals.
- Coordinate music for holy days, funerals, memorial services, and special events.
- Recruit, train, schedule, and supervise volunteer musicians and singers.
- Work closely with the Lead Protestant Chaplain and Chapel team.
- Support presentation slides and required audio/visual equipment.
- Assist with music ministry planning and administrative requirements.

The person
We are looking for a Protestant Music Director who has:
- At least two years of experience as a church music director or primary musician.
- Strong piano/keyboard or guitar skills.
- The ability to read music, transpose, sight-read or lead from charts, and improvise.
- Working knowledge of contemporary, traditional, and gospel worship music.
- Confidence leading musicians, vocalists, and volunteers.
- Strong communication and interpersonal skills.
You must be at least 18 with a high school diploma or equivalent. A bachelor’s degree in music is preferred but not required. An interview/audition and FBI background check are required.
