Catholic Music Director - $50.00 per hour, commensurate with experience - Vandenberg Space Force Base in Lompoc, California
Do you have experience leading Catholic worship music and the confidence to guide a congregation from the piano, keyboard, or guitar? Can you bring musicians and vocalists together while choosing music that complements the liturgical calendar, Scripture, and each service?
The role
We are looking for a part-time Catholic Music Director to support the Catholic worship community at Vandenberg Space Force Base in Lompoc, California.
This is a hands-on opportunity for an experienced church musician who enjoys creating meaningful worship through music. You will work closely with the Catholic Chaplain/Priest to prepare and lead music for weekly services, rehearsals, holy days, and other special occasions.
The Catholic Music Director position offers approximately 4 hours per week, on a 1099 independent contractor basis.
You may lead music independently or recruit, train, and direct volunteer singers and instrumentalists.
Key Responsibilities
- Lead music during weekly Catholic worship services and rehearsals.
- Select music that reflects the liturgical calendar, Scripture readings, and service themes.
- Provide preludes, offertories, postludes, hymns, anthems, solos, and other appropriate music.
- Play piano/keyboard or guitar while leading congregational singing.
- Organize and direct choir and musician rehearsals.
- Coordinate special musical performances with the Chaplain/Priest.
- Recruit, train, schedule, and supervise music program volunteers.
- Assist with music ministry planning, events, and administrative requirements.
- Operate required audio/visual equipment and help volunteers use it correctly.

The person
The successful Catholic Music Director will have:
- At least two years of experience as a church music director or primary musician.
- Strong piano/keyboard or guitar skills.
- The ability to read music, transpose, sight-read or lead from charts, and improvise.
- Knowledge of Catholic hymns, liturgical music, and Gregorian chant.
- Confidence leading singers, musicians, and volunteers.
- Clear written and spoken English.
You must be at least 18 with a high school diploma or equivalent. A bachelor’s degree in music is preferred but not required. An interview/audition and FBI background check are required.
