WORK SCHEDULE:
6:00 a.m. - 2:30 p.m., M-F summer hours
7: 00 a.m. – 3:30 p.m., M-F winter hours

Incumbent serves as General/HVAC Technician for the Porter County Commissioners, responsible for overseeing proper and efficient operations of water and plumbing, HVAC, and electrical systems.

Primary Responsibilities:
- Maintain, diagnose, and repair HVAC systems including furnaces, air conditioners, heat pumps, and mini-splits
- Perform preventative maintenance and system inspections
- Troubleshoot performance issues and recommend system improvements
- Perform basic electrical work (lighting, outlets, breakers, controls)
- Perform plumbing repairs (fixtures, drains, water heaters, valves)
- Assist with maintenance of generators and other building systems
General Facilities Support:
- Support small construction and repair projects (walls, flooring, painting, etc.)
- Maintain and repair equipment such as commercial kitchen appliances and refrigeration units
- Respond to maintenance requests across county buildings
- Participate in an on-call rotation for emergency maintenance needs

Required:
- High school diploma or GED
- Valid driver’s license with a safe driving record
- EPA Universal Certification (or ability to obtain within a defined timeframe)
- Experience working with HVAC systems
- Ability to properly drive a vehicle and operate standard office equipment, including computers, calculators, and other equipment as needed
Preferred:
- Experience in electrical and/or plumbing maintenance
- Experience in commercial, industrial, or institutional facilities
- Ability to read and interpret blueprints or technical diagrams
Nice to Have:
- Backflow certification, welding experience, or other trade certifications or willing to go for training.
- Practical knowledge of and ability to make practical application of Department safety policies and procedures, including OHSA guidelines and basic maintenance and sanitation requirements for assigned areas of responsibility.
Work Environment & Physical Requirements
- Work is performed in a variety of indoor and outdoor environments across county facilities
- Regular lifting (50+ lbs), bending, climbing, and working in confined or elevated spaces
- Exposure to weather, mechanical systems, and maintenance-related hazards
- Must be able to respond to after-hours emergencies during assigned on-call rotation
- moving parts, power machinery and potentially hazardous cleaning materials.
- Incumbent periodically works on high ladders.
- Safety precautions must be followed at all times to avoid injury to self and others.
- Incumbent occasionally works extended, weekend and/or evening hours, according to shift assignment.

- Incumbent maintains frequent contact with co-workers, other County departments, and the public for the purposes of exchanging information and rendering services
- Incumbent reports directly to Facilities Director.
- Ability to work alone with minimum supervision and with others in a team environment.
- Ability to work rapidly for long periods on several tasks at a time, often under time pressure.
- Ability to plan and layout assigned work projects and apply knowledge of people and locations.
