The Commissioning & Start-Up Electrician plays a critical role in ensuring the safe, reliable, and efficient operation of electrical systems supporting mission-critical facility infrastructure. This position is hands-on and field-based, focused on pre-energization, commissioning, start-up, troubleshooting, and repair of electrical systems.
The ideal candidate will work closely with Construction, Commissioning, Facilities Operations, and Engineering teams to support system turnover, testing, and long-term operational reliability.
Key Responsibilities
- Perform pre-energization inspections and checks on newly installed electrical systems
- Troubleshoot, diagnose, and repair electrical systems and equipment supporting critical infrastructure
- Install electrical systems including panels, circuits, lighting, and commercial equipment in accordance with construction documents, schematics, and verbal instructions
- Diagnose and repair electrical components such as contactors, relays, motors, motor starters, and motor control systems
- Conduct detailed testing and commissioning of electrical systems including relay controls, VFDs, transformers, feeders, and motor circuits using standard electrical testing methods
- Install and terminate motor feeders, junction boxes, raceways, and electrical distribution systems in compliance with applicable codes and standards
- Operate mobile equipment such as forklifts, scissor lifts, and boom lifts to complete work at various elevations
- Inspect electrical systems and components to identify hazards, deficiencies, or required repairs, ensuring compliance with safety, regulatory, and quality standards
- Maintain a strong focus on safety, quality, and documentation throughout commissioning and start-up activities
Required Qualifications
- Strong working knowledge of Control of Hazardous Energy procedures (Lockout/Tagout – LOTO)
- Solid understanding of electrical theory, including voltage, current, and power distribution
- Ability to read and interpret electrical schematics, one-lines, and construction drawings
- Proficiency with electrical testing equipment and basic electrical mathematics
- Commissioning and troubleshooting experience with low-voltage electrical systems
- Familiarity with electrical codes and standards including NEC, NFPA 70E, and OSHA regulations
- Ability to work at heights, stand, walk, and sit for extended periods, and lift 10–20 lbs regularly
Preferred Qualifications
- Medium-voltage commissioning or troubleshooting experience
- Experience with protection relays, breaker trip settings, and system testing procedures
- Prior experience in mission-critical, industrial, or large commercial facilities
